5 safety tips for safe play on your wooden climbing frame
Safety is always a priority at Jungle Gym. Our playsets are carefully designed, tested according to the highest European standards (EN 71), and TÜV certified. However, even the best playset requires clear instructions for safe use. In this blog, you will read what to pay attention to before, during, and after assembly.
1. Before you start: read the manual thoroughly
Before you begin building your climbing frame, take time to carefully read through the full assembly manual. This not only helps you avoid mistakes but also gives you insight into:
- The tools and parts you’ll need;
- The correct order of assembly;
- Specific safety warnings for each component;
Note: Our manuals are tailored specifically to your chosen configuration. Each Jungle Gym playset is unique, especially if you have customized it using our climbing frame configurator. Looking for the manual for your climbing frame? Check out our manual portal and find your manual in no time!
2. Choose a safe spot in the garden
The right surface and location are essential for safe play:
- Level ground: Make sure the playset stands securely and evenly.
- Clear space: Allow at least 2 metres of free space around the playset, especially near swings.
- Ground surface: Ideally, place it on grass, rubber tiles, or bark mulch. Avoid hard surfaces like concrete or stone.
- Anchoring: Check for pipes or cables underground before installing ground anchors.
3. Assemble carefully and check everything
When assembling:
- Sort all parts and double-check that nothing is missing — this helps keep things organized.
- Always use the included fasteners and fittings.
- Secure the playset firmly with the included screw-in ground anchors.
- After assembly, ensure everything is tight, stable, and free from splinters or sharp edges.
Tip: Build together with another adult — it’s not only safer, but also a lot more fun!
4. Use & supervision: what to watch out for
Even the most carefully assembled climbing frame requires supervision while children play on it. This is the case especially during the first few times, since your little one will still need to discover all the different parts of their climbing frame. We have listed the most important tips to look out for while your children enjoy their play equipment:
- Always keep an eye on children under 10.
- Only one child per swing or slide at a time.
- Make sure children aren't wearing wet or slippery shoes.
- Regularly check for wear, damage, or loose parts.
5. Regular maintenance extends the life of your climbing frame
All Jungle Gym playsets are made from high-quality European timber. If you choose Douglas wood, you’re getting a top-tier material with beautiful grain and long-lasting strength. Still, we recommend:
- Annual checks for wood rot, rust, or wear.
- Replacing swing hooks and ropes every 12 months.
- Inspecting the structure after any storm or harsh winter.
